England Flying in Formation
The amount of spin that’s been put on England’s display
against Wales from within the camp would scarcely discredit Shane
Warne.
Evidently, the England party were well pleased with the formation,
the performance and of course the result.
Let’s take them one at a time. Forget all that nonsense about
Wales being a small country, low in the world rankings and without
a single premiership club. Their history is the story of men like
John Charles, Ian Rush, Mark Hughes and John Toshack, so naturally
the prospect of facing them in a qualifying match at the Millennium
Stadium simply cried out for a cautious approach. Especially when
you bear in mind the fact that Toshack’s side can boast premiership
experience (well, some of them anyway).
Clearly, it was a time for cool heads and the right formation –
a formation that makes the best possible use of the players’
strengths while carefully concealing their weaknesses. Goalkeeper
and back four, with five in midfield and one up front. That’s
the ticket.
In particular, two players held the key. First, the ‘Makelele
role’, protecting the back four with decisive interceptions
and strong tackles before initiating attacks. Tailor made for David
Beckham. Then Wayne Rooney, in the lone striker job up front that
he loves so much, and which provides such a broad canvas for his
exceptional talents.
It all worked beautifully. England had lots of possession and scored
with a terrific own goal from Danny Gabbidon, thanks to a shot by
Joe Cole which Welsh keeper Coyne seemed to have covered - and Robinson
made a world class save from John Hartson’s header. In the
second half, Sven produced some inspired substitutions, most notably
in replacing Wright-Phillips.
So much for spin. It’s the 3 points that count. Which is
probably just as well, since as a spectacle the highlights of the
afternoon were the Welsh national anthem and the honest endeavour
of John Toshack’s side, who despite being hopelessly outclassed
made a real game of it – and but for the brilliance of Robinson
might have earned a draw.
All we can do now is look forward to Sven’s next over from
the Windsor Park end.
