Return of the King

Last night Thierry Henry returned, refreshed and reinvigorated, to inspire Arsenal to a demolition of lowly Charlton Athletic which was far more emphatic than the 4-0 scoreline suggests.

But for the brilliance of Scott Carson in Charlton’s goal, the Gunners would have soared into double figures. They could have been three up before the penalty from Thierry Henry which gave them the lead. They had a goal disallowed. They hit the woodwork. Tomas Rosicky was desperately unlucky not to score on two occasions. Fabregas and Hleb went close. And by the time Robin Van Persie got the fourth with a delicate chip over Carson, Gunners fans were convinced that Charlton had got off extremely lightly.

Above all it was a treat to see Thierry Henry back. The real Henry. He was magical and still he gave the impression that there is more to come.

It is a prospect which will strike fear into defending players at all the clubs remaining on Arsenal’s fixture list – in the Premiership and in Europe.
