Nightmare Vision
Charlton fans might be a bit puzzled right now. Not to mention confused. And more than a little disappointed. It seems that no sooner had the euphoria accompanying the appearance of Alan Pardew started than it began to wane. First he was adamant that Darren Bent would not be sold, then Darren Bent got injured and by some strange logic his projected six week absence from duty became a reason why he should be sold. Then there was a whisper that he might stay after all.
In the meantime, Charlton Athletic went to the Emirates Stadium, where Mr Pardew renewed his frosty acquaintance with Arsene Wenger and his struggling team were given a football lesson infinitely more thorough and comprehensive than the 4-0 scoreline suggests. In the process, one of their players was rightly dismissed and when they subsequently challenged the decision the F.A. were so cross they doubled the suspension in recognition of a “frivolous” appeal.
Then Charlton travelled to Nottingham, where they were soundly beaten by Forest in the 3rd round of the F.A. Cup. According to reports, the performance was so grim that many regard it as confirmation that whatever Pardew does he will not escape relegation and might as well start preparing for life in the Championship – a division of which he has considerable experience.
Less than a year ago, Charlton Athletic were an established Premiership football club with a long serving and much respected manager, Alan Curbishley. Now, three managers and several nightmares later, it seems much longer.
