It is sometimes necessary to face up to the truth, however painful or unpalatable it may be, and for Chelsea fans – especially Roman Abramovic, their biggest fan – the bitter truth is that much better use could have been made of all those hundreds of millions.

A few simple comparisons should suffice to illustrate the point. Would Arsenal swap Fabregas for Lampard? Or Drogba for Henry? Toure for Carvalho? Clichy for Cole? Rosicky for Robben? Hleb for Wright-Phillips? Would they want Ballack or Shevchenko at any price? Most important of all, would they even consider exchanging Arsene Wenger for Mourinho?

And on top of all that, there are the kids. The supremely talented kids.

Which in Chelsea’s case they have not got.
