Hammers on the Up

After overcoming initial scepticism and a degree of hostility following his move from Reading, West Ham boss Alan Pardew has established his side in the top half of the table half way through their first season back in the premiership – an achievement which has enabled him to persuade the board to sanction a record fee to secure Norwich and England Under 21 striker Dean Ashton, who was paraded at Upton Park before the 2-1 victory over Fulham.

With Ashton, Bobby Zamora, Marlon Harewood and Teddy Sheringham, the Hammers have some formidable competition up front. Nigel Reo-Coker and Yossi Benayoun have impressed in midfield and former Manchester United keeper Roy Carroll has the benefit of Daniel Gabbidon and Anton Ferdinand in front of him.

The Fulham game was marked by an incredible goal from Ferdinand and an emotional farewell from Tomas Repka, who was making his last appearance for the club.
