Dismal Spurs Drop Points at Sunderland

Up at the Stadium of Light, the Spurs faithful were in full voice, joyfully chanting “Are you watching Arsenal?” It was approaching half-time and their team had already taken the lead against luckless Sunderland when Robbie Keane eluded Gary Breen to run in Defoe’s cross.

Well, Arsenal may not have done so well this season, but here was a game that will give them enormous encouragement. Spurs went up to the North East with a team that was superior in every department, to play a side that is already doomed – and in the end all they had to show for it was a point.

Not a single Sunderland player would have merited selection for Spurs’ side and up front they were virtually impotent, with Kyle laboured, Stead devoid of confidence because he simply can’t score and the talented Le Tallec unaccountably kept on the bench until the last few minutes. All they had to offer was unrelenting effort and an indomitable spirit and to Spurs’ embarrassment, it was enough because substitute Daryle Murphy was allowed to force his way through for a dramatic late equalizer and Jenas squandered a chance to win it with virtually the last kick of the game.
