It's Looking Like Shaun-Wrong Phillips Now

When Shaun Wright-Phillips completed his move from Manchester City to Chelsea in July 2005, he is quoted as saying, “I just want to win a lot of medals”.

Nice work if you can get it, but first you have to play. How many games has Shaun started? How many times has he been on the bench? And how many times has he failed to make it even to the bench?

At Manchester City he was a star, playing every week, getting rave reviews and a fair few goals, dreaming of the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

The World Cup? You must be joking. First you have to play regularly and play well – because if you are selected for the England squad on the strength of your performance on the bench, it will be a first.

Whatever they are paying Shaun Wright-Phillips at Chelsea, it isn’t enough.

Not enough, that is, to compensate him for sacrificing his World Cup hopes.
