The Bigger Picture

No doubt Steven Gerrard will be particularly keen to do well in England’s forthcoming friendly against Uruguay, but according to reports Liverpool boss Raffa Benitez has asked Sven Goran Eriksson to leave him out.

Benitez is wise. The Liverpool captain has already played an enormous number of games this season and would benefit from some respite.

And whatever the aims of this international friendly, surely they don’t include discovering whether Steven Gerrard is good enough to represent his country in Germany this summer.

The England manager would be better advised to concentrate on other issues. He might, for instance, like to find out whether Wes Brown can reproduce his Manchester United form in England’s back four. Because recently, Brown’s performances have been sensational.
