Boro Still In With A Shout
For Roma, the transition from Tiber to Tees proved too much of a culture shock, thanks to a rain lashed patchwork playing surface that was part paddy field, part pitch and putt course and a Middlesbrough team that is acquiring a reputation for beating top sides and disappointing against mediocre ones.
As a result, Roma had most of the possession but Boro controlled the game, restricting the opposition largely to long range efforts and finding time to create one or two chances of their own.
Unfortunately, all they had to show for their impressive performance was a single goal from a penalty engineered skilfully by the experienced Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and converted nonchalantly by Yakubu and when they go to Rome for the second leg, the narrowest of leads may not prove a firm enough foundation upon which to extend their European adventure.
