Writing on the Wall
It is becoming increasingly apparent that for West Bromwich Albion, a repeat of last season’ Great Escape’ is more a matter of hope and prayer than expectation.
A home game against Liverpool offered the prospect of some reward, especially with Steven Gerrard missing from the Reds line-up, but within 6 minutes the Baggies had got off to the worst possible start as Robbie Fowler ran in a perfect cross from Cisse.
It was the signal for Liverpool to assume control of the game, dominate possession and create numerous chances – though they were unable to add to their lead until the 37th minute when a fabulous 40 yard pass from Alonso allowed Cisse to walz round the Albion keeper and finish comfortably.
In the second half the home side were boosted by the appearance of Gera, raising speculation as to why he spent so long on the bench - but although they fought hard, Liverpool always gave the impression that they were capable of moving up a gear or two against a pedestrian outfit whose Premiership days already appear to be numbered, particularly in the light of Portsmouth’s away win at Craven Cottage and Birmingham’s battling draw against Chelsea.
