It is a mark of a civilised, intelligent and compassionate organisation that it is concerned not merely with the letter of the law but the spirit of the law.

In the absence of a European Pro Licence, Glenn Roeder could have been compelled to relinquish his duties as caretaker manager of Newcastle united this weekend, but he has been given special dispensation to continue until the end of the season a decision which reflects great credit on the authorities and allows Glenn to continue with the excellent job he has done since the departure of Graeme Souness.

An enlightened approach such as this deserves the highest praise and the greatest publicity the kind that good news so rarely receives.
