F.A. Chance of Success with McClaren
The waiting is over. The speculation is at an end. After due deliberation, (which according to reports included the input of Sir Trevor Brooking, thereby ensuring that the views of one man who had played the game professionally at the highest level might be taken into consideration), The Football Association has appointed its new manager – now fashionably described as the Head Coach. He is Steve McClaren.
At the unveiling, Brian Barwick was at pains to point out that Steve McClaren had been his first choice from the start and at the finish he was also the unanimous choice of everyone involved at The Football Association – though whether he was aware that no-one really believed him is not entirely clear, especially in the light of his recent excursion to Portugal to court Big Phil Scolari.
So what have they got in McClaren? Charisma? Hardly – rather ominously, he confesses to having learned a lot from Sven. A big name? What do you think? A proven track record of success as an international manager? Not applicable. The people’s choice? Far from it. The preferred candidate of the press? You must be joking.
What then? Well, continuity for starters. McClaren has worked as a coach in the England camp for some considerable time, which is useful. Also, the players like him, which sounds useful but could be ominous too. And he speaks English, which can sometimes be a real advantage.
So it’s one cheer for continuity, and we all support McClaren and pray that it’s enough.
