You definitely have to be sitting down to contemplate this one. According to Rob Beasley, writing in the News of the World, “Chelsea have opened talks to make Frank Lampard the highest paid player in the world on an amazing £140,000 a week.”

Yes, perhaps you should read that again. Slowly. The figure is £140,000. Per week. The player’s name is indeed Frank Lampard. And apparently, this would make him the top earning professional footballer in the world. Better off than Ronaldinho and Henry, to mention but two.

Now for that kind of money you expect to get a player who can do things that no other player can do. The trouble is, where Frank is concerned it’s well nigh impossible to identify what those things are.
