The transfer of Lee Bowyer from Newcastle to West Ham United will raise a few eyebrows because, while there’s no doubting his talents, his career has been tarnished by a catalogue of well publicised indiscretions.
Though he is unlikely to admit it, this signing must be a bit of a gamble for manager Alan Pardew, whose achievements in guiding the Hammers to the F.A. Cup Final and an impressive Premiership finish have cemented his position at the club.
At best, he has secured the services of a skilful and competitive player who can only strengthen the squad – if he behaves himself. And at 29 years of age and with his experience, Bowyer should certainly have learned enough by now to do that!
