Italy Through to Knock-out Phase
Italy’s victory against a Czech Republic side reduced to ten men in the first half by the dismissal of Jan Polak was overshadowed by the scandal of match fixing allegations affecting four of the country’s most famous clubs – Juventus, AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina.
The Czechs, who paid a high price for the loss of giant striker Kan Koller in their opening victory against the United States, the surprise defeat to Ghana in the second group game and the lack of match fitness of Milan Baros, still managed to carve out chances – though they tired visibly towards the end and it was no surprise when Italy put the game beyond doubt with a second goal late on.
Now the Azurri face Australia and the prospect of renewing their rivalry with the much travelled and greatly respected Guus Hiddink, whose South Korean side sensationally eliminated them in 2002.
