Germany 3 Divers 1
Congratulations to Germany. The hosts secured third place in the 2006 World Cup with an emphatic 3-1 victory over Fat Phil Scolari’s diving machine, thanks largely to two goals from Schweinsteiger and a Petit own goal, and veteran keeper Oliver Kahn, captain for his international swansong, was deprived of a memorable clean sheet by Portuguese legend Figo, who came off the bench for the last 15 minutes to provide a delightful cross for Nuno Gomes’ 88th minute consolation header.
Now for the difficult bit. The Germans have to persuade charismatic coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who has done wonders with a predominantly young side inexperienced in international competition, to stay on.
Cue Franz Beckenbauer.
