Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce is remaining remarkably calm in the face of news that goalkeeper David James has expressed a wish to leave the club – a sign both of his growing managerial maturity and a quiet confidence in his ability to line up a replacement.

As for James, it’s common knowledge that he is wanted by Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth and hidden somewhere in the small print is the fact that his fiancée lives in the South of England – so he has both motive and opportunity.
