You can almost taste the relief around Newcastle at the news that 26 year old centre back Jean-Alain Boumsong is bound for Italy. He’s signed for newly relegated Juventus and will play in Serie B this season.

Boumsong was recruited by previous manager Graeme Souness from Rangers for £8 million last year (though many will swear it seems longer) and somehow Newcastle have managed to recoup £3.3 million from the Italian club.

There is one snag, however. Apparently, a Juventus v Newcastle friendly at St James’ Park next year is part of the deal, so United fans may have to resign themselves to watching Boumsong one more time.

Unless he’s moved on of course.
