Valued Rear Gunner
On 31st August 2006, the day the transfer window closed, Arsenal sold Pascal Cygan to Spanish club Villarreal for a reported fee of £2 million, which is virtually what the Gunners paid Lille to acquire his services in the summer of 2002.
In four years with the club Pascal made 98 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals, two of them in the same game, and it is a tribute to both the player and Arsenal’s negotiating skills that at 32 years of age, he commanded such a substantial fee. Though much criticised by some fans, he never let the club down, either as a central defender or as an emergency left back, and everyone at Arsenal will wish him well in this next phase of his career.
