Lights Out
Six minutes from full time in England’s qualifier against Macedonia, a grim faced Frank Lampard trudged off the field, to be substituted by Manchester United’s Michael Carrick.
The very idea of substituting Lampard at all is almost unprecedented and both the act itself and the timing of the act will inevitably provoke much speculation. Had Lampard sustained an injury? Was it an official recognition that his performances for England continue to disappoint? Was it simply a managerial decision to give Michael Carrick an opportunity – at last? Or was there some significant tactical reason for the change? And whatever the thinking behind the move, what on earth was the significance of the timing?
