Spurs on the Slide
Scratching around for good news at Spurs is turning into a full-time job and certainly there was little if anything about the performance at Anfield that could even begin to take the grim look off Martin Jol’s face – apart from the fact that referee Howard Webb missed a blatant first half handball from Ledley King on the very edge of the box and to the surprise of many, the away side managed to make it to the interval with the score at 0-0.
Somehow, the 62nd minute seemed to sum it all up perfectly. Spurs substitute Davids broke down the left and sent in a cross that was so inviting that all Jenas had to do was steer it into the net from a yard out. For a moment Jol’s heart must have soared, until Jenas missed and Liverpool swept straight down the other end and scored a bizarre opener. Gerrard flashed in a cross which Bellamy should have converted easily but he hit the post and for a split second it was déjà vu, until Mark Gonzales seized on the rebound and put Liverpool in front.
Four minutes later they were two up, as Garcia found Kuyt who hammered the ball in from 10 yards, beating Robinson at the near post and the rout was complete when Riise sent in a 35 yard thunderbolt which the England goalkeeper could only admire.
So dismal Spurs trudged off the Anfield pitch in the knowledge that all they have to show from 6 Premiership fixtures is 3 points from their victory against Sheffield United, the only game in which they have managed to score.
No wonder Jol’s face is grim.
