There could hardly be a more eloquent testimony to the achievement of Arsene Wenger’s ten magnificent years as Arsenal manager than a goal of such breathtaking quality that no-one who was fortunate enough to see it is likely ever to forget it. Perhaps that is what Arsene himself meant when he described Robin Van Persie’s stunning volley against Charlton Athletic as the “goal of a lifetime’.

That goal did far more than win a game; it epitomised a whole era – the best that the Arsenal Football Club, with its long and proud traditions, has ever had.
