Rooney Inspires United Comeback
Even when Wigan Athletic swept into a surprise 4th minute lead at the JJB with a stunning 25 yard free kick that gave full back Leighton Baines his first Premiership goal, there was always the feeling that Manchester United would take all three points.
Gradually, Wigan began to look shaky at the back as United increased the pressure. Carrick shot over, Saha fired the ball wide and in the 23rd minute a resurgent Wayne Rooney produced a terrific piece of control to set up a shot on the turn that thundered against the bar.
Rooney’s form and the substitution of Ryan Giggs for Wes Brown were the keys to United’s second half domination. After near misses from Solskjaer, Giggs and Saha, Vidic headed the equaliser, and his first goal for the club, from Giggs corner, then four minutes later Rooney’s cross allowed Saha to fire them in front from four yards. And finally, an impudent flick from Rooney set up Solskjaer for a low far post finish in the 92nd minute.
