Reid Not Great
The death of George Best and the banishment of Rodney Marsh to what he likes to call ‘Radioland’ have deprived Sky’s ‘Soccer Saturday’ of two of its most entertaining and colourful contributors and there is no better indication of how difficult they have been to replace that the continuing presence of that well known trundler, Peter Reid.
To begin with, he is, through no fault of his own, not visually appealing. He has, to use the familiar cliché, a face which is better suited to radio and he does himself no favours by constantly bringing his hands into contact with his nose when on camera.
As for the quality of his ‘punditry’, it is by no means enhanced by the fact that it is delivered in a broad Scouse accent, on a flat monotone and exasperatingly littered with the one word which he apparently finds as indispensable as Chris Kamara’s ‘unbelievable’ – ‘great’.
Between them, there is no doubt that Messrs Reid and Kamara could exaggerate, and bore, for England.
