Meek and Feeble
Whatever you think about Mike Riley (refereeing’s answer to Mr Bean with a side serving of Cyrano de Bergerac) at least he’s consistent. Consistently mediocre, that is. Yet even he occasionally has the capacity to surprise. Just when you thought he was Manchester United’s friend, he turns up at Ewood Park and calmly allows Blackburn Rovers midfielder Tugay to chop Ronaldo at the knee without so much as a flash of yellow, then four minutes later benevolently tolerates Emerton’s illegal tackle on Saha in the box.
No penalty. No bottle. And no wonder Sir Alex prefers Graham Poll these days.
