Connections
It’s easy to see why Charlton’s Andy Reid has been compared to the late Ferenc Puskas. With his rather rotund, generously upholstered figure, he’s certainly no speed merchant, and he gives the same impression of an unathletic figure who looks rather incongruous in the context of a top football match. But while Reid is very good technically, as his winning goal against Everton demonstrated, he isn’t in the same class as the great Hungarian who went on to star for Real Madrid in one of the finest club sides the world has ever seen.
A much more appropriate comparison can be made with John Robertson, once an integral part of Brian Clough’s wonderful Nottingham Forest side (Reid’s old club) and now assistant to Martin O’Neill at Aston Villa. And if he does as well as Robertson, Andy Reid will no doubt consider that he has had a very satisfying career indeed.
