The Price
On Sunday 10th December 2006, Ashley Cole will take his place in the Chelsea team to face Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. It will feel strange for him. The man who some time ago was described by many good judges as the best left back in the world is no longer part of the club that nurtured him, or the team which by common consent plays the most exciting, imaginative and fluent football in the land.
These days, he dances to an entirely different tune – a predictable rhythm dictated by pragmatism and efficiency. Far less melodic and much less entertaining, but apparently infinitely more lucrative.
As the man many now call ‘Cashley’ faces the wrath of the Gunners fans who once adored him, he may wonder if his new found wealth is adequate compensation for becoming a cog in such an efficient machine – even if Chelsea win. Because now it is not the beautiful game, but the relentless accumulation of points in pursuit of the coveted trophy that is all-important.
