Silva Lining
Arsene Wenger had the confidence and the strength to predict well in advance of the London derby at Stamford Bridge that his predominantly young team would do well against Chelsea – even without world class players of the calibre of Thierry Henry, William Gallas, Kolo Toure and Tomas Rosicky – and he was proved right.
It’s largely a matter of faith, especially in the ability and temperament of young players like Djourou, Eboue, Senderos, Fabregas, Flamini, Adebayor and Van Persie, which was tested to the limit against everything the Premiership Champions threw at them. But if there was one player who stood out in such a magnificent team performance it was Gilberto Silva. He seemed to be everywhere, protecting a young back four, intercepting passes, clearing off the line, setting up attacks, leading the team, acting as diplomat.
They still talk of Vieira being irreplaceable. Here’s another World Cup winner Arsenal must dread having one day to do without. A man of extraordinary talent, exemplary character, genuine modesty and great loyalty. And a real leader.
