Lately, hardly a day has passed without rumours of the possible departure of Alan Smith, either on loan to a club like Cardiff City or his former club Leeds United, or on a permanent deal in the January transfer window, with Everton reportedly the latest suitors.

All this interest isn’t in the least surprising because Smith is a very talented player and an outstanding professional who has worked hard and with great determination to rehabilitate himself after a horrendous injury. But those are precisely the reasons why Sir Alex Ferguson is so keen to keep him at Old Trafford.
