Is Jimmy Hill The Weakest Link?
On 25th September 2005, the subject of Alex Ferguson being booed
by sections of the Manchester United crowd after the defeat by Mark
Hughes’ Blackburn Rovers cropped up on Jimmy Hill’s
Sunday Supplement.
Jim’s own response was to point out earnestly the danger
that after several years a team will have heard absolutely everything
the manager has to say – which therefore makes it very difficult
for him to continue to motivate his players.
What is interesting is that after doing this programme for some
years, the old boy completely fails to appreciate the irony of this
remark.
So on behalf of his regular viewers, who have become exasperatingly
familiar with Jim’s views on recruiting ex-professional players
as referees; the importance of managers not talking to press or
TV immediately after a game; the danger of our game being infiltrated
by legions of foreign players/managers/coaches; England’s
left sided problem; and above all, Jim’s paramount consideration
in football, the need for every team to have a ‘number 9’
– please, Jim, could you resolve to struggle through at least
a programme or two without trotting out any of the old chestnuts.
Because some of us – and that may well include a majority
of your guests – are beginning to feel that we really have
heard everything you have to say!
