The Security Game
Thanks to Manchester United’s memorable victory over Chelsea at
Old Trafford – a victory which will stand despite the fact that
in the eyes of the Special One they didn’t deserve it – Sir Alex
is officially off the brink.
This of course does not mean that if United experience another wobbly
in the future, the press will refrain from claiming that he is back
on the brink – but if it’s any consolation the same could be said
of many others. Graeme Souness, Steve Bruce, Mick McCarthy, David
Moyes, Brian Robson – all of them have recently had brinks of their
own to contend with.
Sooner or later, it happens to practically every football manager.
Insecurity, it seems, is part of the job description. So much so
that it would be accurate to describe the vast majority of them
as being of no fixed brink.
Unlike those who appointed them.
