Wayne’s International Svengali
You simply can’t put a price on what Sven Goran Eriksson’s doing
for Wayne Rooney’s international career. Resisting the temptation
to build a team around him. Playing him out wide, or up front on
his own, to enrich his experience. Indulging his little outbursts
and tantrums, on the grounds that he’ll be a shadow of his former
self if you teach him how to behave properly. Allowing him the necessary
latitude to abuse the England captain and a selection of opposing
players and match officials.
Not many managers are capable of handling gifted young players like
this. But as far as Sven is concerned, it’s just part of his unique
high profile, hands-on approach to the job.
And at nearly five million quid a year, it’s an absolute steal.
